Welcome to Smith School

The Emma C. Smith Elementary School community works hard to ensure high levels of learning for all students in order to prepare them to become responsible citizens and productive community members.  Smith offers a learning environment with high expectations that allows each student to grow as an individual.

We strive for students to experience the excitement of learning and develop the love of knowledge.  We believe that educating students is a cooperative effort between the home and school.

August 2018

Dear Emma C. Smith Elementary School Families,

I am excited to be the instructional leader at Smith Elementary! I have the pleasure of working alongside a team of dedicated teachers and staff members who share my commitment to creating the best possible environment for your children to learn and thrive. We are all grateful to be part of a school district that values educating the whole child - focusing on academic, behavioral, and social emotional learning and success.

In addition to our district’s goals, I am eager to bring a strong focus on technology into our classrooms. I envision a school in which all children are able to use technology as a tool to communicate, learn, and create. We have been able to upgrade our technology in the past few years, and I would like to continue that plan and expand it so that we have a 1:1 computer accessibility at Smith Elementary in the very near future.

My vision outpaces our district and school funding allocations. So, I am turning to the tradition of the Smith Education Fund to seek your support in attaining our goal more quickly, so that your children and all children at Smith can benefit sooner and become digitally literate students.

The Smith Education Fund has provided an opportunity for families and community members to donate to our school to support specific instructional programs. In the past, for example, this fund has added to our ability to provide intervention and counseling support. We still have those programs, now funded by our site allocation.

If you are interested in supporting our effort to create a digitally literate student body and a 21st century classroom and school, please consider donating this year to the Smith Education Fund. Our goal is to raise $80,000 to support our 1:1 technology initiative. If every family donated $150, we would achieve our goal. A donation of any amount is very much appreciated. All donations are tax deductible. I would welcome your donation now or at any time that is convenient for you.

Please know that donations of materials or funds are not required of any student or family.  No child will be denied participation in any activities, regardless of whether donations are given. If you do wish to contribute, please write a check to “LVJUSD - Smith Education Fund.”

Thank you for your support! I look forward to a great year!

Regards,

Joe Meunier, Principal

Electronic Communication Devices

We have students that are taking pictures, videos and using their cell phones during recess.  This is not allowed at school due to privacy laws.

Students at Smith are only allowed to use cell phones, cell watches, and other electronic communication devices with teacher permission in the classroom.  They are not allowed to be used outside of the classroom on campus.

Students that use their electronic communication devices without permission will be sent to the office and their device will be held there for a parent to pick up.  On the second offense, the device will not be allowed on campus again.

California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS)

Parents, your students will be taking the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) online this month.  It is an anonymous survey focused on youth resilience and health risk behavior.  The data collected will be used to help improve health and prevention programs offered to students that can promote academic success, well-being, and positive development of our youth.  If you would like to view the content of the survey, you can ask the school office to see a copy of the survey or you can click here:   http://www.livermoreschools.com/curriculum.
